What if learning more about God could also help you discover more about yourself?
Life is filled with questions. Who am I? What is my purpose? Why am I here? What should I do with my life? Sometimes, we search for answers by looking at our circumstances, achievements, relationships, careers, and the opinions of other people.
But there is another place to begin: learning about God.
When you take time to learn about God's character, His Word, His principles, and His purpose, you may begin to see yourself differently. You begin to examine your values, your choices, your attitude, your relationships, and the direction of your life.
Learning About God Can Lead to Self-Discovery
Self-discovery is not simply discovering what you like or what you want. It can also involve understanding your character, recognizing your strengths, acknowledging areas where you need to grow, and becoming more intentional about the person you are becoming.
Learning about God can encourage you to look deeper.
Instead of asking only, “What do I want?”, you can also ask:
“What kind of person am I becoming?”
“What is God teaching me through this experience?”
“What areas of my life need to change?”
“How can I use my life in a meaningful way?”
These questions can lead to meaningful self-reflection and personal growth.
Your Experiences Can Teach You Something About Yourself
Every season of life can provide an opportunity to learn.
Success can teach you about your abilities. Disappointment can reveal how you respond to difficulty. Relationships can reveal your boundaries and expectations. Mistakes can reveal areas where you need wisdom and growth.
The important question is not simply, “Why did this happen?”
Consider asking:
“What can I learn from this?”
When you approach life with a willingness to learn, even difficult experiences can become opportunities for greater understanding.
God, Purpose, and Personal Growth
Many people spend years searching for purpose.
They may believe that purpose is found only through a career, financial success, recognition, or accomplishments. But purpose can involve much more than what you achieve.
Your purpose can also be connected to your character, your influence, your relationships, your gifts, your service to others, and the way you choose to live.
Learning about God can encourage you to think beyond temporary achievements and consider the person you are becoming.
Your purpose is not simply about what you can accomplish. It is also about who you are becoming along the way.
Take Time to Examine Yourself
Self-reflection requires honesty.
Sometimes we want to understand everyone else while avoiding an honest look at ourselves. We examine other people's behavior, decisions, and mistakes while overlooking our own.
Personal growth begins when we become willing to examine ourselves.
Ask yourself:
- What motivates my decisions?
- How do I respond when things don't go my way?
- How do I treat people?
- What are my priorities?
- What habits are helping me grow?
- What habits are holding me back?
- Am I living according to the values I say I believe?
- What is God teaching me during this season of my life?
You don't have to have every answer today. Growth is a process.
Don't Let Your Past Define Your Future
Your past is part of your story, but it does not have to be the final definition of who you become.
You may have made mistakes. You may have experienced disappointment. You may have taken wrong turns or spent time pursuing things that no longer align with your values.
Those experiences can become lessons.
Instead of constantly asking, “Why did I do that?”, begin asking, “What did I learn, and what can I do differently now?”
Growth happens when reflection leads to action.
Build Your Life With Intention
Learning about God and learning about yourself should not remain only an intellectual exercise.
Let what you learn influence the way you live.
Be more intentional with your words. Be more thoughtful about your decisions. Treat people with greater respect. Develop your gifts. Work on your character. Practice gratitude. Seek wisdom. Give yourself permission to grow.
You may not be able to control everything that happens in your life, but you can pay attention to what your experiences are teaching you.
5 Questions for Personal Reflection
Take a few minutes today and honestly answer these questions:
- What is God teaching me about myself right now?
- What area of my character needs the most growth?
- What experience has taught me an important lesson about myself?
- What do I need to release so I can continue growing?

Write your answers down. Come back to them later. Your answers may change as you grow.
